Our Curriculum Approach

Our Blossom Curriculum

Everything we do at The Bishops’ is underpinned by The Parable of the Mustard Seed.

If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. Matthew 17:20.

Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs and interests of our school community, local area and national and global context, using the national curriculum as the basis. We believe we have created a curriculum and ethos that enables all to flourish academically spiritually and emotionally.

Each subject has been carefully sequenced to ensure coherence year on year and that the learning journey for each of our children is broad, balanced and meaningful. Every subject has its own integrity to ensure that we remain true to the underlying principles of each subject.

At The Bishops’ we give our children the ability to blossom and flourish through a combination of community, experiences, language, and finally, knowledge and skills. Our 4 Golden Threads are embedded throughout our curriculum to provide our children with the experiences, skills, and knowledge they need to achieve their full potential.

Community

At The Bishops’ we come together as one family through belonging. We have a shared set of six Christian values that are embedded within everything we do and ensure we are inclusive for all. We work together collaboratively, support each other, and actively encourage parents to be a part of their children’s learning both in school and at home. We recognise the need to ensure all children in Team Bishops’ have an awareness of diversity and culture and strive to celebrate this with each other. We ensure that children taking on their learning journey through Bishops’ leave with the skills and knowledge to become citizens in the future.

Experiences

At The Bishops’ we believe happiness is the key to a positive and successful education, as well as encouraging kind and good moral characters. It is important to us that our children, from Nursery to Year 6, are immersed in experiences that are inclusive, meaningful, challenging, and engaging. Every experience will be active and hands-on, stimulating curiosity and questions whilst providing our children with the opportunities to explore their own learning and motivating them to take risks and challenges. Experiences can be seen in many different ways at The Bishops’ such as school trips, collective worship, visitors, resources, and experiences within lessons.

Language

At The Bishops’ we are proud of the diversity within our school and the richness brought by the variety of languages spoken in our community. The ability to communicate effectively is essential to both building relationships and learning and is a core priority within our school. Challenging, high quality texts are shared in lessons and read for pleasure; children’s vocabulary is developed and extended through deliberate teaching and the use of sentence stems to improve the syntax and develop children’s abilities to articulate their ideas; and children are encouraged to share their views and opinions through our pupil voice leadership groups. As an inclusive school, we the highest

aspirations for all our children and provide a range of opportunities and experiences for all children to develop and use an increasing range of vocabulary and sentences effectively.

Knowledge and Skills

Here at The Bishops’, we believe all our children deserve the opportunity to leave each key stage with the knowledge and skills needed to excel as they move to the next phase of their education. Our curriculum, underpinned by the National Curriculum, is carefully sequenced and progressive giving time to ensure children know more and remember more. We have a focus on providing children, of all abilities and backgrounds, the chance to apply their new learning and take risks to solve challenging problems in all subjects.

We measure the impact of our curriculum by considering how our children are developing into well rounded, happy and successful individuals.

1. What we learn through our curriculum – developing our children’s knowledge and understanding.

2. Who we are – developing our children’s character, responsibility and sense of belonging.

3. How we behave – developing our children as self-aware and successful learners.

Our curriculum places great emphasis on our local history, geography and culture to help our children feel part of our rich and diverse community of Newquay. Living in such an inspiring place means we can also draw heavily on our local area to give greater meaning and purpose to out Blossom curriculum.

Personal Development

Life in all its fullness. John 10:10

Personal development is fundamental in everything that we do at The Bishops’. Our character education is values based, encourages independence, promotes resilience and embeds a range of skills that teaches children to be lifelong learners.

At The Bishops’, we support children to acquire the knowledge and understanding they need to manage their lives both now and in the future. We aim to develop the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and positive members of their community. We aspire to prepare children to manage opportunities, challenges and responsibilities that they will face growing up in a rapidly changing world.
